100080 Private Charles H. Rose

"B" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Charles Henry Rose lied about his age to enlist. Although claiming to be 28, he was in fact only 16. During the voyage to England, Rose fell violently ill and eventually disclosed he was younger than he first claimed to military authorities. By the time the then 17 year old's real age was discovered, he was soon after sent to join the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in Flanders. Nine days after arriving at the front in March 1916, Rose was mortally wounded by a machine gun bullet received whilst on a working party near Sanctuary Wood. He died of his injuries that night and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Flanders.
