100512 Private Richard T. Widger

Signal Section, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Richard Thomas Widger joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in February 1916. He was wounded during the counter-attack on Sanctuary Wood that June but only slightly and so remained on duty. His luck would change when he was severely wounded during the attack on Regina Trench in October. He died several days later in hospital. Upon his death, Richard's younger brother would be inspired to enlist. He too would be killed two years later during the Battle of Amiens.
