100725 Private Clement A. Thieme

"D" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Clement August Thieme joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in June 1916. During the Battle of Courcelette, his company was part of a risky manoeuvre to establish a new trench line in close proximity to the German held Zollern Trench. Heavy casualties were sustained as the men dug in and given the positions isolated nature, evacuation of the wounded was near impossible. Hours before the company was to be relieved, Thieme was mortally wounded by enemy fire and died before reaching medical aid. With no known grave, he is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial. Three of his brothers also served in the 49th Battalion (E.R.).
