100994 Private Burton S. Read

"A" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Burton Samuel Read joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in Flanders in June 1916. He was wounded by shellfire in August and again during the attack on Regina Trench in October. On both occasions he returned to his post soon after. The day before the attack on Vimy Ridge, the Canadian artillery opened up a heavy barrage on the German front. German guns retaliated with high explosive shells on the Quarry Line. Read was wounded during the shelling and was amongst the first 49th Battalion (E.R.) for the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He survived the war and passed away in Moncton, New Brunswick, in 1964.
