Bert Herbert Sayles joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in June 1917. During the "Long Trip" in the spring of 1918 when the 49th Battalion (E.R.) spent 58 consecutive days in the frontline, Sayles fell ill. Suffering from tuberculosis and trench fever, he was invalided to England. He rejoined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in October 1918 and survived the war. After the war, Sayles settled in Doncaster, England.
