253055 Private Nobuichi Uyeda

"C" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Nobuichi Uyeda was one of 227 Japanese Canadians to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and one of only five to serve with the 49th Battalion (E.R.). Joining the battalion in April 1917, Uyeda was wounded during a German gotha bombing raid near Wieltje, Belgium, in October 1917. He was invalided to hospital and ultimately discharged as medically unfit. Nobuichi Uyeda passed away from shock in January 1942 after reading the morning newspaper. He blew a gasket and died from hypertension.
