3205832 Private William H. Powell
"B" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Private William Henry Powell, a blacksmith from Edmonton, was conscripted into the army in early 1918 and joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France that June. On the opening day of the Battle of Amiens the battalion advanced over open fields encountering only scattered resistance, principally from German machine guns. While moving on the final objective, Powell was struck in the throat by a bullet from enemy machine-gun fire and killed instantly. He was originally buried by his comrades near where he fell. His grave was later moved to Caix British Cemetery.
