"D" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

William McCall MacMillan joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in Flanders in May 1916. During the failed attack on Regina Trench that October, MacMillan's company faced uncut concertina wire and an entrenched enemy force. They were obliterated. Of the 109 who went into the attack, only 15 were still on strength by the end of the day. William McCall MacMillan was posted as missing. His body was never found. His brother Ian MacMillan would also go missing during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917.
