James Alfred Ploughman joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in Flanders in May 1916. Within weeks would be fighting for his life during the counter-attack at Sanctuary Wood. Surviving the action, he would later partake in the fighting at Courcelette commencing on September 15th 1916. A member of the battalion bombers, Ploughman and his comrades were engaged in extremely intense and near constant close-quarters combat. Ploughman was killed on the second day of fighting and subsequently buried at Ovillers Military Cemetery, France.
