432030 Private James Flippance

"D" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

James Flippance enlisted into the 49th Battalion (E.R.) on the first day of recruitment in 1915. Wounded during the counter-attack on Sanctuary Wood in June 1916, he returned to service soon after. During the 8th of October 1916 attack on Regina Trench, "D" Company faced annihilation before uncut concertina wire and murderous machine gun fire. Of 109 that went into the action, only 15 were left standing by the end of the engagement. Flippance was reported missing after the attack. His remains were later recovered and interned at Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.
