Fred Hughes enlisted in the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in January 1915. After reaching France, he fell ill with enteric fever and was invalided to England. He later became a physical training instructor and joined the Canadian Army Gymnastic Staff, finishing the war as RSM in charge of Physical Training and Bayonet Instruction for the Alberta Regimental Depot in England. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he rejoined the Edmonton Regiment, becoming Company Sergeant Major of the Reinforcement Company and went on to participate in the Spitsbergen raid in 1942.
