432331 Sergeant Bertram E. G. Clibbery

"A" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Born in Birmingham, England, Bertram Clibbery immigrated to Edmonton in 1908 and enlisted in the 49th Battalion on 5 January 1915. A beloved battalion cook known for both skill and mischief, he placed second in a London cookery exam and played a colourful role in the infamous “Battle of Saint Martins Plain” when several stolen barrels of rum were brought to the 49th Battalion's canteens and distributed to the men. In early 1919, while posted at Witley Camp, he fell ill with the Spanish Flu and died on 18 February, just days before his 37th birthday.
