John Mitchell enlisted into the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in 1915. Arriving in Flanders by the end of the year, he participated in the daylight charge on Sanctuary Wood in June 1916. He was wounded soon after the attack began and with another wounded Fortyniner, he attempted to reach the nearby dressing station by foot. John Mitchell would never make it to the nearby dressing station at Maple Copse. He was 19 years of age. With no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres.
