432855 CQMS Harry J. Bennett
"A" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Harry Jarman Bennett enlisted into the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in January 1915. Serving in “A” Company, he was part of the first wave of the Sanctuary Wood counter-attack in June 1916 and despite being wounded, fought on for two days until the force was relieved. Later that summer he fell seriously ill with trench fever and jaundice, requiring months of treatment and recovery in England. Declared fit in early 1917, Bennett returned to France and eventually became Company Quartermaster Sergeant for "A" Company the following year. He survived the war and later ran a furniture store in Vancouver and died in Burnaby, British Columbia, in 1951.
