"A" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Harry Jarman Bennett was born in London in 1885 and later settled in Edmonton, working as a shipper. He enlisted in the original 49th Battalion (E.R.) in January 1915, serving in “A” Company. Wounded at the Sanctuary Wood counter attack in June 1916, he later contracted trench fever and jaundice, requiring extended hospitalization in England. Returning to France in mid-1917, he served with the 3rd Entrenching Battalion and later rejoined “A” Company, becoming Company Quartermaster Sergeant. Present at Mons in November 1918, he returned to Canada with the battalion in 1919. After the war, he ran a furniture store in Vancouver and died in 1951.
