Sergeant George Henry Carter, a veteran of the Boer War, enlisted in the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in 1915 and served as Provost Sergeant in France. Wounded during the counter-attack Sanctuary Wood in June 1916, he returned to duty the next day. That September, while leading a sick party to the Somme, he witnessed the only suicide in the battalion, later testifying at the inquiry. In December 1917, he was transferred to England for service at Bramshott Camp. Suffering from myalgia, he returned to Canada in late 1918 and was discharged in January 1919. Carter farmed in Grande Prairie until his death in 1961.
