433043 Sergeant Robert Henderson DCM MM & Bar
Scouts, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Robert Henderson, an original Fortyniner, quickly proved himself one of the battalion’s finest scouts and snipers. His steady nerve in isolated forward work earned him one of the unit’s first Military Medals, and he was immediately transferred to the new Intelligence Section upon formation in 1916. Wounded at Regina Trench after confirming the enemy wire remained uncut, he returned to scouting the next year. At Passchendaele he pushed ahead under heavy fire to mark the line and locate neighbouring units, completing every task despite the mud and enemy fire, and received a Bar to his Military Medal. In 1918 he was named the battalion’s best shot. At Amiens he fought on after being shot through the shoulder, retrieved a Lewis gun under fire, and annihilated the enemy resistance earning the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He survived the war and later farmed and trapped in Notikewin, Alberta, until his death in 1972.
