433118 Corporal William J. Berry
"B" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
William John Berry enlisted in 49th Battalion (E.R.) in 1915. He was severely wounded in the Ypres Salient in August 1916 but ultimately recovered and returned to France. During the attack near Parvillers on August 13 1918, Berry climbed out of a trench to ascertain the source of enemy machine-gun fire. At close range, he was shot through the chest by a German revolver and killed instantly. His platoon commander later wrote that Berry “did not know what fear was.” He was later buried at Fouquescourt British Cemetery.
