433143 Sergeant Fred Johnson

"A" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Fred Johnson was a newspaper reporter from Ireland before enlisting with the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in 1915. During the strenuous summer training in England before the battalion deployed to France, Johnson sustained injuries resulting in hospitalizations on two occasions. Ultimately, when the 49th Battalion (E.R.) deployed to France, Johnson was left behind. He would later go onto serve most of the war as a clerk, principally at Rouen, France.
