435540 Private William G. Cool
"C" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
William George Cool was only 15 years old when left home to enlist. He joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France aged 17 in June 1917. During the trench fighting in Kit Trench at Pelves in August 1918, Lieutenant F. N. Cluff was shot in the head as he peaked over the parapet to observe the German position. Cool standing beside him at the time, began immediately evacuating the officer from the battlefront. Upon realizing he was dead, Cool returned to the frontline to avenge the death of his officer. After heavy fighting, Kit Trench was captured and the battle was won. Cool was gunned down the following month by German machine gun fire during the advance on Cambrai. He rests today in Drummond Cemetery, France
