436706 Private Albert H. Young

Tunnelling Detachment, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Albert Henry Young was a miner in Edmonton before enlisting in 1915. Joining the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in England that fall, he sailed to France that October. In March 1916, a call was made for volunteers to aide British tunnelling efforts beneath Sanctuary Wood. Young was amongst a handful of men that answered the call. Work was strenuous, difficult and dangerous. On the morning of the 2nd of June 1916, the Germans launched a massive bombardment and assault on the Canadian positions at Sanctuary Wood. The Tunnelling Detail was overwhelmed and obliterated. Albert Henry Young was reported missing that day. His body was never found.
