"B" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Herbert Williams joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in Flanders in May 1916. Days later he was thrusted into the battalion's first major engagement: the counter-attack on Sanctuary Wood. He survived. In October, he partook in the attack on Regina Trench. His company saw extremely heavy fighting in the Kenora Communication Trench as they held off against withering German counter-attacks and bombing raids. Eventually a withdraw was ordered. Herbert Williams was reported missing following the battle. His body was never found.
