Henry W. King was born in Indiana, USA, in 1891. A widower, farmer, and former U.S. Infantry soldier, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 and joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France by May 1916. He was slightly wounded during the counter-attack at Sanctuary Wood but remained at duty. he later served through the Somme and into the Vimy sector. On January 28, 1917, after a successful trench raid near Chassery Crater, enemy artillery struck the Canadian lines. Lance Corporal King was among three fatalities from the barrage.
