432182 Corporal George H. Hackett MiD
Bombers, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Corporal George Henry Hackett was posthumously recommended for a Mention in Dispatches for his bravery during the Battle of Sanctuary Wood in June 1916. After a daylight charge failed, fierce trench fighting ensued. When the Battalion’s Bombing Officer was severely wounded, Hackett took command of the Bombing Platoon, leading by voice and example. Under relentless enemy shelling and grenade attacks, he directed the defense of a key position on Gourock Road until he was killed at his post. Leaving behind a widow and four children, his remains were recovered in 1926 and interred at Oostaverne Wood Cemetery, Flanders.
