James Middleton he lied about his age to enlist. Joining the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in November 1917, he served on the frontline until his real age of 17 was discovered in April 1918. Transferred to the Young Soldiers Battalion in England, he would never return to France. He was discharged in 1919.
