"B" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

John McGuckin was living in the Ritz Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia, when he enlisted in February 1916. A year later, he arrived in France for service with the 54th (Kootenay) Battalion at the front. Within a handful of weeks, McGuckin was back in England recuperating from illnesses he received in the trenches on Vimy Ridge. By the summer of 1918, he returned to France for service with the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment). He was killed by shellfire during the advance on Cambrai on the 29th of September 1918 and is buried in Crest Cemetery.
