"C" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Sidney Leslie Perkins joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in December 1916. Shortly after relieving a different Canadian battalion in the frontline trenches near Avion, France, the Germans unleashed heavy shell fire upon the Canadian line. Private Lawrence L. Baugust MM was killed and eight others wounded. Amongst the wounded was Perkins who had severe shrapnel wounds to his head. Evacuated to hospital in St. Omer, he succumbed to his injuries six weeks later.
