812076 Private Louis Miller

"C" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Louis Miller joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in December 1916. Following the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the battalion were deployed into trenches in front of Méricourt. On the night of April 30th, mustard gas was deployed onto the 49th Battalion (E.R.) for the first time. Mistaken for harmless tear gas, it seeped largely unnoticed into dugouts where several men were sleeping. They were killed by the gas in their sleep. Amongst them was Louis Miller. He rests today at La Chaudiere Military Cemetery, France.
