"D" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Joseph Wallace "Wally" Gladstone joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in December 1916. Well regarded as a fearless stretcher bearer within "D" Company, he was responsible for saving numerous lives in multiple battles. By August 1918, he found himself spearheading a trench assault on the village of Pelves. Despite the constant and deadly danger he was in throughout the operation, he performed his duties with the utmost vigour and determination until the battle was won. After the war, Gladstone was employed as a game warden in Waterton and Banff National Parks. During the Second World War, he joined the Veterans Guard of Canada and was responsible for the foiling of German prison escapes. Gladstone passed away in Pincher Creek, Alberta, in 1968.
