At Avion, France, Captain "Jim" Mead led "A" Company onto the final objective in a trench raid. Despite heavy shell fire, he led by example and inspired those around him in their duties until the battle was won. He was awarded the Military Cross.
Twice wounded during the war, Jim Mead MC was accidentally killed by a sentry when returning from a solo night patrol in No Man's Land in January 1918. He left a wife and daughter at home in Lake Saskatoon, Grande Prairie. He was buried at Fossé 10 Cemetery, France, aged 38.
