Captain John L. Bishopric
"D" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
John Lloyd Bishopric was a prominent member of Edmonton society before the war. An officer in the militia, he was also a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. In early 1915, he enlisted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force and ultimately reached France in the summer of 1917 for service as a Lieutenant with the 49th Battalion (E.R.). Soon after arriving, Bishopric found himself leading a trench raid on Hill 70. The raid was a success and despite being wounded, Bishopric remained at duty. He was killed the following month by shrapnel on the Passchendaele Ridge, hours before the battalion's attack. With no known grave, Bishopric is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.
