"A" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Michael George Ellis displayed exceptional bravery during the counterattack at Sanctuary Wood on June 3, 1916. When all officers of “A” Company were killed or wounded, he took command under relentless fire, rallying his men and consolidating captured positions. For his leadership and courage, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Despite being wounded, he remained on duty. Ellis was killed near Courcelette on the morning of September 16th 1916, when enemy shellfire collapsed Battalion Headquarters. He and several others were entombed inside. He is believed to be buried in an unidentified grave in ADANAC Military Cemetery.
