Michael G. Ellis DCM

"A" Company, 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment)

In June 1916, "A" Company of the 49th Battalion (E.R.) made a frontal charge against entrenched enemy positions. Coming under heavy machine gun and artillery fire, they were massacred. With all the officers killed or wounded, Company Sergeant Major Micheal George Ellis took command and led the survivors on for 40 hours until releived.

He was killed three months later by shell concussion during the fighting at Courcelette. He is buried in an unidentified grave of a Second Lieutenant of the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in ADANAC Military Cemetery, Somme.
