While serving as a Corporal during the 1916 Battle of the Somme, Patterson led the daring bombing assault that captured more than 60 German prisoners and directly contributed to the first Victoria Cross awarded to the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment). With only a dozen men under his command, he achieved something that an entire Canadian regiment failed to do so the day before. Patterson later was commissioned and served as bombing officer of the 7th Brigade.
