Frederick Hughes

"B" Company, 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment)

Fred Hughes rapidly rose through the ranks and was a Lance Sergeant by the time the 49th Battalion (E.R.) reached Flanders in 1915. Within weeks, however, he became ill with trench fever and returned to England where he became a physical training instructor and joined the Canadian Army Gymnastic Staff, finishing the war as Regimental Sergeant Major in charge of Physical Training and Bayonet Instruction for the Alberta Regimental Depot.

He reenlisted into the Edmonton Regiment in 1939, becoming Company Sergeant Major of the Reinforcement Company and went onto participate in the Spitsbergen raid in 1942.
