Lieutenant Arthur E. Edwards MiD
Signal Section, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Arthur Edgar Edwards enlisted in the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in early 1915 and rose quickly within the signals section. As Signal Sergeant, he was wounded by a German rifle grenade blast in April 1916, returning to duty two months later he would go onto fight at the Somme and at Vimy Ridge. Commissioned in 1917, he was again wounded in a German air raid at Wieltje in October of that year but soon after returned to duty. Edwards fought at Passchendaele and throughout the Hundred Days Offensive of 1918. At Parvillers he singlehandedly charged and captured an enemy machine gun post. At Pelves he advanced through heavy fire to direct his men and establish full battalion communications within an hour of the village’s capture. Though recommended three times for the Military Cross and once for the Star of Romania, he received only a Mention in Despatches. He passed away in 1940.
