Arthur E. Edwards MiD

"C" Company, 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment)

In August 1918, "C" Company of the 49th Battalion (E.R.) was to lead a trench assault against German held trenches North of Parvillers. Facing heavy machine gun fire, the assault developed into a close quarters trench fight.

When a German block guarded by machine guns was holding up his platoon's advance, Lieutenant Arthur Edgar Edwards charged and silenced it with hand grenades. Those who witnessed it said he showed an absolute contempt of death. The advance continued and the objectives ultimately achieved.

"Sunk" Edwards was wounded twice during the war and returned to Canada in 1919. In all, he would be thrice recommended for the Military Cross and once the Star of Romania but only ever be officially mentioned in despatches.
