Lieutenant Stanley H. Thieme

"C" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)

Stanley Henry Thieme was a troop commander under Major W.A. Griesbach in the 19th Alberta Dragoons when war broke out. Both sailed overseas in 1914, but whilst Thieme deployed to France in 1915, Griesbach returned to Canada to raise the 49th Battalion (E.R.). Thieme was later offered and accepted a commission with the 49th Battalion (E.R.) that summer in England and went onto marry Griesbach’s cousin, Gladys May, before redeploying to Flanders. Thieme became sick from the cold and wet conditions on the Kemmel Front that winter leading him to be invalided out and eventually discharge in 1917. He later helped create the 49th Battalion Association and went onto lead the Royal Canadian Legion in Hythe, Alberta. He died in 1955. Three of his brothers also served in the 49th Battalion (E.R.).
