
Major Frank S. Winser MC
"D" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Frank Scott Winser gained a commission as an officer in the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in early 1915. Quickly distinguishing himself on the frontlines in Flanders, he led aggressive patrols into No Mans Land and later commanded the battalion's Intelligence Section made up of Scouts and Snipers. After recovering from wounds received during the Sanctuary Wood counter-attack, Winser took over command of "D" Company and led them over the top at Vimy Ridge and the Avion Trench Raid of 1917. He was highly respected and affectionately known asThe Goat by his men. Winser rose to serve as Brigade Major the following year and survived the war. He returned to engineering and passed away in 1942.
