808157 Private Carl Hill MM
"C" Company, 49th Battalion (E.R.)
Charles Hill joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in France in December 1916. Notorious for his fighting spirit and bravert, he was said to have bayonetted five or six Germans single handedly on one occasion at Méricourt. During the Battle of Cambrai in September 1918, he too would distinguish himself. Whilst under intense machine-gun fire, he advanced boldly, firing his Lewis Gun from the hip to keep the attack moving. Despite being wounded, he continued fire until his gun was destroyed by three direct hits. For his bravery he was awarded the Military Medal. Hill was thrice wounded during the war but survived, ultimately passing away in Edmonton in 1938.
