George Henry Carter

George Henry Carter joined the British Army at 18 and spent twelve years serving across the Empire in Gibraltar, Malta, South Africa, India and England before emmigrating to Canada.

He was wounded during the Sanctuary Wood counter attack in June 1916. Three months later, while leading an advance sick party on the march to the Somme front, Carter witnessed the Battalion's only recorded suicide. Seeing Private S.C. Hines lagging behind, he called for him to catch up. Instead, Hines reached for his rifle and shot himself. Carter later recalled, "I heard a shot and he rolled off the bank."

A respected Provost Sergeant known for his good humour and firm leadership, Carter survived the war and took up a homestead near Grande Prairie.
