Sydney A. Messum MiD

"A" Company, 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment)

Sydney Arthur Messum was wounded during the holding action at Hessian Trench, Somme, in early October 1916 but recovered. In April 1917, he was Mentioned in Dispatches.

"This non-commissioned officer has served with this Battalion in France for 17 months, and upon every occasion of stress in which his company has found itself, he has displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and has greatly inspired all ranks in his company."

During the assault on Tilloy in September 1918, all "A" Company officers were killed or wounded. Messum took command, led the men to capture the objective, but was killed during the consolidation of the newly captured positions.
